Cuban revolution in a video game
Gesta Final is a video game directly inspired by the communist revolution of Cuba. The players re-enact the historical battles, posing as Che Guevara, Fidel Castro and Camilo Cienfuegos. Viva la Revoluzione!
Gesta Final, means Final Heroic Deed. It’s a 3D FPS, in the style of Call of Duty. The game starts on the deck of the historical yacht Granma and takes the action on the wetlands and mountain trails of Cuba, following the guerilla steps of the original revolution. The final goal is simple: usurp the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista.
The player has a choice of three bearded characters, not quite the same but very much alike, the three historical figures of the Cuban Revolution. There are five levels of increasing difficulty and you have to fight and survive using vintage guns like Colt.45 and Springfield.
True to the historical facts, the plot will never let you approach Batista, since he was already long gone when Castro’s troops entered the capital. The last act is a recreation of the “Pino del Agua II” battle, which led to the final victory of the rebels.
The Cuba’s Youth Computing Club team, under Haylin Cojuro developed the game, said their aim was to teach the young Cubans their history. As the leader of the project said in the media, “We didn’t want the characters to identify any revolutionary leader, but we did want it to frame the moment. The player identifies with the history of Cuba."
