The designer of the laptop, Bill Moggridge, has died aged 69, leaving behind one of the most dramatic changes in the computing landscape.

The British designer came up with the Grid Compass in 1979 for the US military, making computers portable by having the screen fold over the keyboard, a revolutionary idea at the time and one that we now take somewhat for granted.

The original laptop cost $8,150 and was utilised on the Discovery space shuttle, but now laptop computers are ubiquitous, known more as a consumer device than something for soldiers and scientists.

Moggridge wrote two books called Designing Media and Designing Interactions, and he acted as visiting professor at the Royal College of Art in London and consulting associate professor at Stanford University in California. He was also given a lifetime achievement award by the Duke of Edinburgh in 2010.

He died of cancer and is survived by his wife and two sons – and a legacy of laptop devices that are still going strong in the face of tough competition from smartphones and tablet computers.
