Second-gen Google Nexus 7 coming in July for $229

Since Google I/O 2013 has come and gone without any new hardware being unveiled, one would be inclined to think Nexus 7’s follow-up has either been delayed or isn’t coming period. According to Digitimes though, that’s not the case and the second-gen N7 will go on sale next month.

nexus 7 Second gen Google Nexus 7 coming in July for $229

As far as we know, that’s always been Asus and Google’s plan, especially since the first-gen 7-inch tablet has seen daylight in July 2012. What this latest report adds to the mix however is a newly speculated price point – $229 for the 16 GB version.

That’s a little north of earlier guesstimated figures, but it’s still not exactly a fortune. Plus, if all the rumors are to be trusted, the Nexus 7-2 will considerably improve on its ancestor’s spec sheet, with a 1,920 x 1,200 pix res screen, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean (if it exists) and either an S4 Pro or a Snapdragon 600 quad-core CPU.

Apparently, one of the reasons Google is planning to price the second Nexus 7 higher than the first (besides the boosted production costs) is that it wants to clearly distinguish it from entry-level 7-inch tablets manufactured by Acer and Asus solo.

Therefore, three segments of the small tablet market are likely to result, one including only Apple’s future iPad Mini 2 (expected to cost around $300), one with the N7-2 and Amazon’s Kindle Fires in it and the last one being the low-end mentioned above.

That makes sense, doesn’t it? Now let’s just wait and see if Digitimes will get it right this time or if the publication’s “sources from the upstream supply chain” are ill-informed. Only a few weeks to go if the second-gen N7 is in fact to be released in July…
