Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that it is ending some of its Facebook games, including The Sims Social, SimCity Social, and Pet Society.

The game publisher said that millions of people initially signed in to play these games, but the figures have dropped considerably since then. It pointed to an overall turndown in interest in social games, which has resulted in other shutdowns.

Despite the popularity of the Sims and SimCity names, both social variants and Pet Society will be turned off on 14 June, 2013. This gives players two months to get in some last game time and say farewell to their beloved people, cities, or pets.

EA said it is not giving up on Facebook games, however, and pointed to the popularity of titles from its PopCap studio, which include Bejeweled Blitz, Solitaire Blitz and Plants vs. Zombies Adventures. These are much more casual games, which might explain their survival.

EA is offering fans of the soon-to-be-closed games the opportunity to switch to a PopCap game instead. It will be giving special offers to encourage transitions.

The game closures are part of a larger series of cutbacks at EA after consistent losses, which prompted former CEO John Riccitiello to resign. Last week we reported the layoffs of a number of employees at two of EA's mobile gaming divisions. We will likely be hearing about more cuts in the coming weeks and months.
