eBay is capitalising on the iPhone 5 announcement by accepting trade-ins of old smartphones, including the iPhone 4S, for up to $400.

The online auction firm will accept old phones, working or broken, from today to 19 September, and will pay a fairly decent amount for them, which will help with the purchase of a new device, such as the recently unveiled new iPhone.

A working 64GB AT&T iPhone 4S will fetch $400, while a broken one will net $125. The 16GB model will grant $300 working, $125 broken. eBay will pay $235 for a working 32GB AT&T iPhone 4 and $100 for a broken one. The 32GB iPhone 3GS will trade for $115 working and $30 broken.

For those who prefer Android, the HTC EVO 4G LTE will net $200 working and $65 broken. The Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX will result in $165 cash for a working model and $60 if broken.

BlackBerry users are not left out of the loop either. The 9930 Bold will fetch $165 working, $55 broken, while the 9810 Torch will go for $155 working, $55 broken.

Many more models are available for trade-in, and those with no value can be sent for free to be recycled.

All prices say “up to,” so the final figure may be less, depending on a number of factors. Users can “lock in” their trade-in price, which will mean the figure won't fall from the one initially given, and users will have until 1 October to send their old phone, which will give plenty of time to get an iPhone 5 from 21 September.

The offer can be availed of at www.instantsale.com or through the eBay Instant Sale iPhone app.
