Introduction

Intel’s 90nm Pentium 4 processor based on the Prescott core was
unveiled two months back but since then it has been slow in making its way into
the channels due to slower than expected ramping of the 90nm process. Prescott
is packed with larger L2 cache of 1MB, 13 new Prescott instructions, SSE3 etc.
but its performance is hampered by a deep 31-stages pipeline and scalability
limited by the heat . Although the factors currently do not seem too favorable
for 478-pin Prescott now but the arrival of LGA775 Prescott together with the
new Intel desktop chipsets, the Grantsdale and Alderwood next month will once
again set the pace going. Users who are currently looking into a purchase can
either paired up a Northwood or a Prescott with the Canterwood/Springdale boards
or wait for another month or two for the new platforms.

EPoX has a new board, the 4PDA5+ based on the Intel 865PE
chipset that officially support Prescott. It is probably the last 865PE board
they are going to make before shifting their focus to the Grantsdale and
Alderwood. To be classed as "Prescott ready" motherboard, EPoX has made several
enhancements to the 4PDA5+ to ensure full compatibility with Prescott mainly the
power circuitry design. 4PDA5+ comes in a shiny brown box and the board sports
the usual greenish PCB. It features support for Dual Channel DDR400, 7.1 Channel
Audio, 4 x Serial ATA 150 ports with RAID 0,1,0+1 functionality, Gigabit LAN,
PostPort, S/PDIF-out and 6 USB 2.0 ports. We will take a close look at its board features, BIOS features,
performance as well as their overclockability.
