EVGA have announced what looks like an exciting launch for a new dual-GPU Nvidia card. The launch date is set to 30th October, so that pretty much rules out a Fermi dual GPU board (barring true miracles). There's a riddle, which should hint what this "new" dual-GPU card is all about.


Bright Side of News have an interesting scoop on this launch - they claim the answer to that riddle is "It calculates how a bat flies too".

It is rumoured to be a dual-GPU card with two different GPUs - a GT200b GPU from the GTX 275 and a separate G92b GPU from the GTS 250. The GT200b does the 3D rendering, while the G92b die is dedicated to PhysX.

It is clear that Nvidia/EVGA are homing in on their only gaming feature advantage over ATI at this point - PhysX. Sadly, unless you are playing one of the few games that do support PhysX, we can't imagine what the GTS 250 might be doing, other than sitting idle and effectively being wasted. If it does indeed turn out to be a G92b/GT200b combination, maybe EVGA have a trick up their sleeves. 

This dual-GPU card will be priced around the GTX 285, i.e. $349-$419. From the ATI side, it will be competing against the HD 5870. Of course - while playing PhysX, something this card is directly aimed at, the HD 5870 is not much of a competitor as it doesn't support PhysX. Playing a non-PhysX game, however, the HD 5870 will end up much faster. As will the more expensive GTX 295, and it will be interesting to see how these compete in PhysX. We can expect this card to consume just over 250W power at load.

We will keep an eye out for this rather interesting, yet unnamed, dual-GPU card. Can't think of many practical uses for it though - perhaps if you absolutely love Batman: Arkham Asylum and is the game that dominates your gaming time.
