It seems that rumours of the popular social networking network Facebook being interested in creating its own Facebook-branded phone has been officially declared as baloney. According to a statement from Facebook themselves, building phones is just not what the company does.

Do you remember the rumours floating around the Internet about Facebook planning to create its own mobile phone? Well, if you have bought into the rumours and are currently holding out for a Facebook-branded phone, perhaps you might want to forget all about it and spend your money on something else?

And if you are wondering why, here’s our answer: that rumour you have just heard is nothing more than a hoax. However, it had apparently gathered so much traction that Facebook themselves probably saw it fit to release an official statement about the whole hoo-haa created by the rumour. Here is the actual statement, reproduced in its entirety from Marshable:

“The story, which originated in Techcrunch, is not accurate. Facebook (Facebook) is not building a phone. Our approach has always been to make phones and apps more social. Current projects include include everything from an HTML5 version of the site to apps on major platforms to full Connect support with SDKs to deeper integrations with some manufacturers. Our view is that almost all experiences would be better if they were social, so integrating deeply into existing platforms and operating systems is a good way to enable this. For an example, check out Connect for iPhone and the integration we have with contact syncing through our iPhone app. Another example is the INQ1 phone with Facebook integration (the first so-called ‘Facebook Phone’). The people mentioned in the story are working on these projects. The bottom line is that whenever we work on a deep integration, people want to call it a ‘Facebook Phone’ because that’s such an attractive soundbite, but building phones is just not what we do.”

And there you have it: there will be no Facebook phones anytime soon, or in the near future, for that matter. But if you are still keen on getting yourself a smartphone which links up to the popular social networking protocol, perhaps Apple and Google may be able to interest you with their impressive lineup of iPhone and Android-powered smartphones.
