Facebook offers new APIs to news organizations for finding trending posts, introducing ads to Instagram
Facebook announced in a blog post today that it is giving news organizations access to search public posts using a keyword, and then broadcast it online or on TV in real-time.
Facebook is steadily including more and more features that are akin to what Twitter offers, like hashtags, embeddable posts, and a trending segment. Today, it has announced two new APIs called the Keyword Insights API and the Public Feed API. The Keyword Insights API is an aggregator that can find the total number of posts by targeting a keyword and a time frame. It can be used to find anonymous, aggregated results based on gender, age and location. Media organizations can utilize this tool to see how many users are actively taking about a given TV show or broadcast event, where they are from, and their gender.
The Public Feed API allows organizations to show a real-time feed for a selected keyword. Facebook mentions that the feeds will be gathered only from public pages and profiles. Currently, these two tools will be available to media outlets like Buzzfeed, CNN, NBC’s Today Show, BSkyB, and Slate, with more set to follow in the coming weeks.
In other news, Emily White, Instagram’s director of business operations said that ads will be rolled out to the image sharing service starting next year. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, she said, “We want to make money in the long term, but we don’t have any short-term pressure.” While further details on how the ads would be served are not known yet, Ms. White did mention that her team is looking at Instagram’s Discover feature as a possibility for monetization.
