Facebook will unveil a new homescreen for Android on Thursday, making the social network a central element of a user's device, while HTC is also set to launch a Facebook phone to support the new software launch.

The new software, which goes beyond just a simple app update, will be available for all Android phones, including the market leader Samsung, but leaked software obtained by Android Police revealed that HTC is planning a mid-range device with the Facebook homescreen as the main focus, likely in a deal with the social networking giant in order to recoup market share lost to other Android device manufacturers.

The new HTC phone is expected to have a 4.3-inch display, 1GB RAM, and run on Android 4.1.2 with HTC Sense 4.5.

Details are scarce on the Facebook homepage itself, but it will likely include a search bar, preset for Bing, thanks to a partnership with Microsoft, but with the option to use alternative search engines like Google.

The beauty of the new homescreen for social networking fanatics is that updates, messages, chat, and other features should all be much more easily accessible, without the need to launch into an app first. If successful we will likely see other app makers follow suit in hopes of earning a place on that lucrative first screen users see when they unlock their phones.

Some analysts are sceptical about Facebook's ability to make money on mobile devices, which currently make up 23 per cent of its revenue. Others, however, see the new homescreen as a perfect way to expand its reach, and therefore its advertising revenue, without needing to launch an operating system of its own.
