First Looks: GIGABYTE G1-Killer Assassin (Intel X58 Express) Motherboard
With killer looks and killer features including the Bigfoot Networks Killer E2100 and true Creative X-Fi audio onboard, GIGABYTE is set on killing the competition with its new G1-Killer Assassin motherboard. In this preview, VR-Zone.com checks out the latest addition to the company's Intel X58 Express motherboard line-up.
GIGABYTE, a well-known and highly-competitive motherboard manufacturer which had its fair share of spats with ASUS, is ready to take on the latter's Republic of Gamers (ROG) motherboard line-up. Enter the GIGABYTE G1-Killer gaming series of motherboards, which are stuffed with gaming-oriented components such as the Bigfoot Networks Killer E2100 networking platform and true Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi audio.
There are three motherboards in the G1-Killer lineup, namely Assassin, Sniper and Guerilla. And today, we will be taking a look at the first board, the Assassin.
The G1-Killer Assassin is decked in a distinct black and green color scheme. Based on the Intel X58 Express chipset, the Assassin supports Socket LGA 1366 processors, including the top-of-the-line hexa-core Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition.
In order to accomodate four PCI Express x16 slots for up to 4-way multi-GPU scaling, the G1-Killer has an XL-ATX form factor, similar to the company's massive GA-X58A-UD9 motherboard.
Fancy some board lighting? A strip of five green LEDs will light up when the motherboard is operational.
The black SATA ports are controlled by the Intel 82801JIR I/O Controller Hub (ICH10R), while the two white SATA ports are controlled by a third-party Marvell 88SE9182 PCI Express 6Gb/s SATA controller.
Both the ICH10R and the iTE IT8720F Super I/O controller, which provides hardware monitoring and fan control, are tucked beneath the large heatsink which resembles a gun magazine. However, only the ICH10R has contact and not the IT8720F (not like it needs cooling anyway).
There are two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 front panel headers along the bottom edge of the board. The USB 2.0 ports are linked to the Intel ICH10R, while the two USB 3.0 to a VLI VL810 SuperSpeed USB hub controller.
There is also a 4-pin 12V molex connector for supplying additional power to the graphics cards in a multi-GPU setup.
