In the age of the Ultrabook, port replicators are set to make something of a comeback, as many people need more than a handful of ports on their notebook. A port replicator also makes it much easier to connect your notebook to an external display, a wired network and of course keyboards and mice as well. The neat thing with a USB 3.0 based port replicator is that you only need to attach a single cable, yet the performance will be vastly much better than similar USB 2.0 based products.

USB Port Replicator PR08 Fujitsu and Lenovo announces DisplayLink based USB 3.0 port replicators

Starting with Fujitsu and its USB 3.0 Port Replicator PR08 we're looking at a couple of unusual features. For starts, Fujitsu has added DisplayPort connectivity to the PR08 which means that you can use a 2560×1600 display with it and this is as far as we're aware a first for a USB 3.0 port replicator. It also sports a DVI-I port which can be used with an adapter to provide a D-sub connector. Other ports include a Gigabit Ethernet port, two USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports – albeit not at full speed as you might already have guessed – and audio jacks for 2.1 or 5.1-channel audio. Again, we're not aware of any other USB based port replicator that offers 5.1-channel sound.

Lenovo has gone down a much more traditional route with its ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock which offers a pair of DVI ports, five USB 3.0 ports – once again, not at full speed – Gigabit Ethernet and some kind of audio ports. Lenovo provided an MSRP of US$179.99 and an availability date of May 15th, whereas Fujitsu decided to provide neither a price, nor a launch date.
