Galaxy working on Nvidia card with six display outputs

Reported by on Monday, March 7 2011 7:16 pm

If you're looking for a different Nvidia card, then maybe Galaxy will have what you're after, at least if you need to be able to connect six displays to one card. It's something of a response to AMD's Eyefinity 6 cards, although it's no clear as to how it works on six displays, as Nvidia generally only allows for two screens per card.

The main PCB of the card is the same as the one the company uses for its GeForce GTX 460 WHDI card and features a small daughterboard which is connected to another small card which in turn is attached to a mini PCI Express slot on the main PCB. The card itself houses a dual-link DVI port and a full-size DisplayPort connector, while the daughterboard sports four mini HDMI connectors.

It's an interesting approach to a problem that doesn't really exist, although if you're set on an Nvidia card and need to use more than two ports at once, you don't have too many options. This is apparently not the final version of the card though, as it's not likely to ship with a GTX 460, especially not as Nvidia has moved on to the 500 series of GPUs and if anything, it's more likely to come with a GTX 560 Ti or something similar.

One problem is that a custom solution like this isn't going to be cheap either and Galaxy's WHDI card is a very expensive solution, although this shouldn't be anywhere nearly as expensive as it doesn't have a transmitter or receiver. That said, there might be some potential niche markets for a card like this, especially as it uses four mini HDMI ports which makes it easy to connect to many different display types without any special cabling, not counting the fact that you need a mini HDMI to HDMI cable or adapter.
