Gearbox Software boss was spied saying some interesting things about the future of the Borderlands series; apparently a next-gen release is in the works and will be announced later this year.

Borderlands 2 Gearbox CEO confirms next gen Borderlands release for 2014, but is it a direct sequel?

The Borderlands series has created a unique niche in gaming, blending action-packed FPS elements with a build-your-own hero series of mechanics akin to RPG’s. It’s crude, hilarious, and just plain wacky–and it remains a beloved virtual playground for gamers all over.

Now Randy Pitchford, the boss over at Gearbox, was seen saying some interesting things regarding a next-gen iteration of the franchise in a recent Tweet.

According to Pitchford, the team is indeed working on an Xbox One/PS4 flavor of Borderlands, and that it may be announced sometime later in 2014:

This caption from the Gearbox president is rather strange when we take his past statements into consideration; not so long ago, Pitchford said that a direct sequel (Borderlands 3) wasn’t in the works. Instead the team is focused on new franchises set in the definitive universe, but they don’t further the story set forth by the two original Borderlands games.

“We are not working on Borderlands 3,” Pitchford began, dispelling the rumors in a few words. “That is unqualified. We have more to do in the franchise, but no there isn’t a Borderlands 3.”

So where does that leave us? There are a few possibilities: Gearbox is working on Borderlands 3 after all (despite Pitchford’s adamant announcement to the contrary); a next-gen port of Borderlands 2 will be announced; or a brand-new adventure with a new cast and crew will be unveiled later this year for PS4 and Xbox One.

Coupled with Telltale’s Tales of the Borderlands series, this year should be a nice boost for the fan-favorite series, especially with a next-gen follow up most likely releasing next year after its 2014 reveal. It’ll definitely be interesting to see what Gearbox has in store for the millions Pandora-fanatics out there, and we can only guess what insane new baddies and situations they’ll throw at us.
