5a GELID Outs Icy Vision Variant for Radeon HD 7900

GELID Solutions launched a variant of its Icy Vision graphics card cooler for AMD Radeon HD 7970 and HD 7950. Called the Icy Vision-A, the cooler is designed keeping in mind the mount-hole spacing, the die-area of the 28 nm "Tahiti" silicon, and the added load-out of memory chips and MOSFETs that come with the new high-end graphics cards.

GELID's current flagship graphics card cooler, the Icy Vision Rev. B, lacks support for Radeon HD 7970 and HD 7950. This could be because the AMD "Tahiti" GPU package has a metal support brace around the die, which is designed to reinforce the package, and ensure that the chip's massive number of pins (balls) apply uniform pressure on the PCB. The support brace has a diamond-shaped cutout surrounding the die, and it is possible that the die and its support brace prevent uniform contact with the base of the Ivy Vision Rev. B heatsink, as it is. The new Icy Vision-A has a diamond-shaped bump on its GPU base, which fits the Tahiti package like a glove.

The heatsink of the Icy Vision-A bears a conventional aluminum fin-stack design. At the base, five 8 mm-thick exposed-copper heat pipes make indirect contact with the GPU over a copper plate. The heat pipes then transport heat to two aluminum fin stacks, where heat is dissipated to the air flow produced by two 92 mm UV-reactive fans. The heatsink has as many as 85 aluminum fins. Measuring 216  x 95  x 52 mm (LxWxH), the Icy Vision-A would require three expansion card slots in your system. It weighs about 465 g.

The Icy Vision-A ships with a large contingent of heatsinks. There are as many as 14 heatsinks for the memory chips (HD 7900 series have 12), three heatsinks for rows of MOSFETs, and other smaller heatsinks of various shapes and sizes, for graphics cards in which MOSFETs are spread around. The auxiliary heatsinks have adhesive thermal pads, while GELID included a syringe of its in-house GC-2 thermal compound, for the main heatsink. Apart from HD 7970 and HD 7950, the cooler includes support for other AMD Radeon GPUs, such as HD5850, HD5870, HD6850, HD6870, HD6950, HD6970, HD7850, and HD7870.
