Gigabyte Communications, a subsidiary of Gigabyte Technology, will join the Taiwan handset market by launching its first Gigabyte-brand GSM mobile handset in July, according to company president Stanley Jenq.

With self-developed content and software engine, the GSM handset features a built-in 1.3-megapixel camera and supports MP3 functionality, Jenq said.

The company will provide other value-added services by setting up a web site, the HiGIGA, to allow handset users to download useful content such as street maps, scenic spots, local restaurants, entertainment and other information, Jenq added.

The Gigabyte-brand handsets are likely to sell through the parent company’s sales channels island-wide, Jeng said, adding that the company plans to launch four to five handsets this year, including one PDA phone for an ODM client.
