Google's latest data shows that usage of Android, ‘Jellybean’ has broken the 10% mark for the first time in six months. Android’s most popular version, 2.3, Gingerbread has dropped below 50%.
Google’s latest statistics on Android usages, which are found at their Android Developer Dashboard site, are showing some interesting changes with users. Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich ranks in at second with a 29.1% usage rate. Android 4.1, Jelly Bean has jumped to be the third most popular system showing the number of devices running the OS to be over 10% in the past six months. The statistics were gathered from Google’s, Google Play app store.
The most popular version of Android is still version 2.3, Gingerbread. Nevertheless, its usage has dropped below 50 percent for the first time to 47.6%. While still highly popular, the Gingerbread version of Android has not been updated since September 2011.
This sudden increase in Jelly Bean is apparently part of a trend. The stats, which were gathered ending on January 3, 2012, shows Jelly Bean use nearly doubling. In all, Jelly Bean usage grew from 2.7 to 6.7 % as compared to the October data.
Android 4.1, Jelly Bean debuted in June 2012 with many smartphone makers switching to the OS soon thereafter. Part of the surge with Jelly Bean may be attributed to Google’s release of the Nexus 10 tablet and their Nexus 4 handset that coincided with the release of Jelly Bean. Soon after its release Samsung offered Jelly Bean on their Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note devices.
