Google has released an update to its Google Docs for Android app, which adds a collaboration feature and several improvements to the interface and formatting.

The addition will allow Android users to see real time updates to their documents as others make changes from their computers, tablets or smartphones. Joining in on the collaboration process is as easy as tapping the document.

The update also improves the interface to make it easier to work on documents while on the go. Users can pinch the screen to zoom in and focus on specific paragraphs or to see the whole document at a glance.

Another important addition is rich text formatting, which lets users stylise documents by adding colour, bolding or italicising words, or creating bullet lists.

This update marks another step in Google's attempts to make Android a viable operating system for enterprise. As business people have become increasingly mobile, travelling abroad for meetings, it has become more essential that smartphones can fill the role of a laptop or desktop computer. Document collaboration is a key part of this.
