Google has announced that it has come up with a few new ways to use its search service and we can imagine that at least one of the two new options is set to become quite popular. The two new options are Google Voice Search and Search by Image, of which the first has been available on Android handsets for quite some time now and the latter being something that we know we'll fine immensely useful and a feature we've been missing from search engines.

Google's Voice Search is currently limited to the Chrome web browser and requires a plugin to be installed. You do of course also need a microphone, as otherwise it'd be hard to do a voice search. A microphone icon will appear in the search bar of Google search once you've installed the plugin and clicking it will enable you to do voice searches. For now, voice search will only be available on Google.com in English, but we'd expect more languages to follow. Google claims to be able to recognise no less than 230 billion words in English, some pretty impressive stuff. We can't see this becoming a huge game changer though, but we can see this becoming a very handy and easy to use tool for handicapped people that are unable to use a keyboard properly.

Search by Image on the other hand is what we'd call a game changer, as sometimes you have a picture of something you don't know what it is and want to try to find out, but it's nigh on impossible to find out what it is. Search by Images is similar to Google Goggles on Android, although somewhat more advanced. For once you're not limited to searching by photos taken by your phone; instead you can search for any pictures on your computer, or even pictures on webpages. Once again a plugin is required although this time it's available for both Chrome and Firefox. Search by Image will be available globally in 40 languages and it'll be interesting to see if Google releases any statistics on how many users will take advantage of the new service.
