Google is offering free public Wi-Fi access in a neighbourhood of Manhattan, New York City, as part of a major redevelopment project in the area.

The search giant teamed up with the Chealsea Improvement Company to provide free outdoor access to the internet in the Chelsea, Manhattan neighbourhood, resulting in it being the largest area of Wi-Fi coverage in the city.

Part of the motivation for the free internet was likely the fact that Google's New York offices are in this part of the city, as are several new technology companies. Google also provides free Wi-Fi in Mountain View, California, where its headquarters is based.

Before people get too excited, however, a spokesperson for Google said that the company does not have any current plans to extend the free Wi-Fi to other regions.

Google is also experimenting with offering 1Gb/s broadband at comparatively low prices to many internet service providers. It is even offering a TV package and free 5Mb/s internet in select areas, with schools and hospitals also benefiting from free access.

Google has long been campaigning for a free and open internet, which means acting as a service provider could help it ensure its internet-based services remain at the fore of the online user experience. Free or cheap internet is certainly going to be a major motivator.
