Google ordered to pay $5 million over infringement of Linux patent
Search engine giant Google has been ordered by the court to pay US$5 million for infringing a Linux patent. The Linux software is used by the company for its server platforms and extends to the Android mobile platform.
Google has been found guilty of infringing patents related to Linux kernel and was ordered to pay US$5 million in fine. The company has been using Linux software on its server platforms and even on its Android mobile platform. With the victory against Google, it could mean trouble for Yahoo, MySpace, Amazon, Paypal, Match.com and AOL who have all been sued by Bedrock Computer Technologies. While the amount may not be a huge sum, it just serves as a reminder to Linux users who are required to pay royalties. More of such law suits could be expected against companies who rely on Linux open source software.
