Google is rumoured to be in talks to acquire WhatsApp for $1 billion, which could greatly enhance the messaging service of future Android builds.

The owners of the popular messaging app, which handles a whopping 18 billion messages every day, have reputedly been discussing a buyout with Google for over a month and are playing hardball in order to get a higher asking price, according to sources cited by Digital Trends.

Google is believed to be offering $1 billion, the same price Facebook paid for Instagram last year. There is speculation that Facebook is also interested in WhatsApp, which could potentially result in a bitter bidding war between the rival companies.

WhatsApp charges a token yearly fee of $0.99 to fund its service, earning a reported $100 million a year. If Google took over it could offer the service for free, but implement advertising, its primary source of revenue.

Google is also reportedly working on a unified communications service called Babel, which should combine Google's different messaging capabilities. Acquiring an established service like WhatsApp could help jump-start the company's efforts and help fill one of the remaining gaps in Google's mobile ecosystem.
