Google’s rumored Gem smartwatch may feature heavy Google Now integration.

After Samsung and the heavily rumored iWatch, it is Google’s turn to be in the growing smartwatch sector.

The search giant is said to be putting the final touches on a smartwatch codenamed Gem. Rumors indicate that the smartwatch will be announced alongside the next Nexus device, the Nexus 5. The smartwatch is rumored to come with Android 4.4 KitKat, which will also likely be officially announced on October 31.

According to 9to5Google’s sources, the Gem will feature heavy integration of Google Now. Google Now offers real-time information for a lot of services that can be customized by the user. It also shows game alerts, lets you set reminders and sends notifications. A service like Google Now would be ideal for a smartwatch as it can show all information that is relevant to the user in a single glance.  The smartwatch is also said to feature a Bluetooth 4.0 LE sensor to communicate with other devices. The Galaxy Gear was heavily criticized as it only works with the Galaxy Note 3, but Google’s offering should work with all compatible devices. The launch date for this device is allegedly October 31, with commercial availability starting next year.
