Rockstar Games’ open-world crime-drama masterpiece Grand Theft Auto V has dominated the gaming industry and has risen to become one of the best-selling games of all time. The game itself has rivaled that of Hollywood blockbusters with its incredible sales figures, and has even go so far as to break no less than seven Guinness World Records in the category of entertainment.
Right now Grand Theft Auto V is the hottest game on the planet. During the first day of availability, the game generated an unbelievable sum of $815 million with over 11 million copies being sold.
Due to this feat, GTA V has become the current Guinness record holder of the best-selling and highest grossing video game in a 24-hour period.
Rockstar’s high-profile release has also earned the award as the fastest entertainment property to hit one billion in sales–which it achieved in just three days.
These are some pretty hefty achievements to say the least, and they have led Take-Two Interactive’s CEO Strauss Zelnick to declare the game as a “cultural phenomenon”:
“Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment,” Zelnick affirmed based on the title’s incredible record-breaking launch.
“We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto 5.”
Guinness Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday is also excited about Grand Theft Auto V‘s inclusion in the books, and highlights that the game has dominated not only the video game industry but the entertainment industry altogether:
“GTA totally deserves to be recognised as an icon of modern British culture, and we’re thrilled to be able to feature the game in the record books,” Glenday began.
“Gaming is no longer a niche hobby, as GTA 5 has proved, and how exciting that it’s taken on the might of Hollywood and won!”
Below are the six records that the game has under its belt at the moment–and who knows, maybe in a few months we’ll see a few more added to the list.
Current Guinness World Records held by Grand Theft Auto V:
1) Best-selling action-adventure videogame in 24 hours
2) Best-selling videogame in 24 hours
3) Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion
4) Fastest videogame to gross $1 billion
5) Highest grossing videogame in 24 hours
6) Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours
7) Most viewed trailer for an action-adventure videogame
It’s great to see the game become officially recognized by the gold-standard in world records, and the game itself has created a satisfying and immensely entertaining experience for gamers across the globe.
To date GTA V continues its superlative track record, accumulating even more acclaim and prestige throughout the gaming sphere as well as the retail market. We’ve seen similar trends throughout the globe, as GTA V topped the UK’s life-time sales charts in just three weeks.
Rockstar is plenty busy with Grand Theft Auto Online, the game’s online multiplayer mode which saw a rocky launch a week ago. In its current state, the online mode is riddled with bugs, errors and glitches, but the devs are hard at work and have since unleashed multiple updates across Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network to address some of these issues.
