On the heels of Rockstar announcing Grand Theft Auto V for next-gen consoles and PC, gamers wasted no time in dissecting the brief announce trailer and comparing it to last-gen footage. The differences are startling to say the least.
When GTA V was released last year on the Xbox 360 and PS3, it was seen as a huge leap in graphical fidelity that pushed both consoles to their limits. Fast-forwarding to Rockstar’s present-day E3 reveal footage, gamers are treated to yet another wave of spectacular high-def improvements that expose the power of the PlayStation 4.
Below we’ve wrangled up some screenshots and GIFS that compare PS3 and PS4 versions of Rockstar’s magnum opus. The differences are stunning to say the least, and in many ways it looks like a completely new game.
The contrasts between these two images (naturally PS4 is on the left, with PS3 on the right) is striking and underlines the massive enhancements that Rockstar has employed to Los Santos and its outlying regions.
Lighting is one of the major noticeable differences, with deeper shadows and effects that bring out the textures in every piece of gleaming metal–as well as the tarry smoke rising from the smokestacks.
Notice the density of the foliage and how detailed the pebbles and rocks are, not to mention the richness of the dirt and mulch.
This GIF features some of the most obvious differences among the platforms and really brings out the new level of quality and definition featured in GTA V‘s PS4 environments.
Elevation seems to be something that the PS4 can target with more realism, along with the sun’s glare and more dense, varied trees. Notice the detail of small things like the shrub to the left. Marvelous.
Taking even just a cursory glance at the above screens and GIFS reveals that Rockstar Games has once again one-upped themselves with the PS4 version of GTA V.
If the screens are this good on the PS4, we can only imagine that they’ll be infinitely more grandiose on the PC. The wait has been long and arduous for PC owners, but when autumn rolls around, millions of gamers will be pushing their rigs to breaking points to get the very best visuals from GTA V–which will certainly make for some dazzling comparison vids.
Rockstar has also revealed that GTA V on PC will come with a full-fledged video editor, which will no-doubt come in handy when prepping comparison vids.
The next-gen port of Grand Theft Auto V is slated for a release in Fall 2014 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. For more info be sure to check out Rockstar’s official website.
