Hackers have left entire cities piled with the bodies of player characters and non-player characters (NPCs) in popular MMO game World of Warcraft.

The exploit allowed some players to massacre the entire population of busy cities like Stormwind and Orgimmar, with at least half a dozen servers affected, including Tarren Mill, Ragnaros, Draenor, Twisting Nether, and Tichondrius.

The exact details of the incident are not known, but some players suggested it was a hack that gave the attackers game master (GM) powers, which include one-shot, instant-death skills.

A vulnerability likely opened up with the recently-launched expansion Mists of Pandaria, but it may have been in operation behind the scenes for some time, potentially causing disruption for some players on a much smaller scale.

Blizzard responded to the news quickly with a hotfix, stating that it “should not be repeatable.” It apologised for the inconvenience and stated that it is “taking this disruptive action very seriously and conducting a thorough investigation.”
