The latest episode of HBO’s hit show had 1.5 million downloads via torrent in the first day after it aired.
Breaking Bad has had its piracy record broken by the second episode of the latest season of HBO’s Game of Thrones.
According to TorrentFreak, more than 193,000 people had shared the episode within the first few hours of it being online and approximately 1.5 million people downloaded the episode in the first 24 hours. It should be noted that these numbers were from one single torrent. As a matter of comparison, the series finale of Breaking Bad had 500,000 downloads within 12 hours of it being posted to torrent trackers.
Data collected by TorrentFreak shows that the bulk of the downloaders came from Australia (where the show is only available legally via an expensive FoxTel subscription), followed by the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and The Netherlands.
Perhaps if studio executives wanted to curb illegal downloads, they would offer a legal means to get Game of Thrones at a price more competitive than an HBO subscription.
