Well, the hard drive makers don't want to be left behind in the race to provide components for Ultrabooks and now Hitachi has announced a new series of 7mm 2.5-inch hard drives.

With its new Travelstar Z7K500 series, Hitachi is offering 7,200rpm 500GB drives with a slim 7mm profile. The new model has a SATA 6Gbps interface, 32MB of cache and Hitachi claims that it delivers up to 33 percent better performance than other 2.5-inch drives, although it's not clear what models Hitachi compared it to.

The Travelstar Z7K500 draws 1.8W during read/write operations and a mere 0.8W when it's in low-power idle mode. Hitachi also offers models with self-encryption and an enhanced-availability SKU for use in data centre environments. Hitachi will be offering the Travelstar Z7K500 in capacities of 250, 320 and 500GB and the company is expecting volume shipments to kick off in March.
