Hitachi Shipped 60GB 1.8-Inch Hard Drive

HGST is announcing worldwide availability of a 60 GB1.8-inch hard disk drive, enabling makers of handheld consumer electronics to design miniature devices without sacrificing storage capability. The new Hitachi 1.8-inch Travelstar C4K60 represents an ideal marriage between small physical size and ultra-high capacity for the digital, mobile consumer. At 60 GB, Hitachi’s newest small-form-factor hard drive is making it possible for end-users to carry up to 15,000 songs, 60,000 pictures (1 MB each) or 240 hours of video (MPEG-4) content in portable devices that are not much bigger than a deck of cards. Hitachi is currently shipping Travelstar C4K60 hard drives with IDE connector to customers worldwide in 20-, 30-, 40- and 60-GB capacities. Hitachi began shipping the ZIF connector version late last year in 20- and 30-GB capacitites.

The new Hitachi 1.8-inch Travelstar C4K60 represents an ideal marriage between

of video (MPEG-4) content in portable devices that are not much bigger than a

The drive’s substantial storage capacity is combined with an industry-standard
IDE** interface. This is intended to provide ease-of-integration for device
manufacturers who are already familiar with the IDE 50-pin connector, which is
traditionally found on 2.5-inch hard drives for notebook computers. Within the
same family of products announced last September, Hitachi also offers a 30
GB1.8-inch hard drive with a ZIF*** connector that’s commonly used by the
consumer electronics industry for component integration. Together, the C4K60
series with IDE and ZIF connectors offers customers the richest set of options
in 1.8-inch drives — spanning size, storage capacity and physical interfaces.

"We’re finding significant customer interest in the 1.8-inch form factor for
small, portable devices that still require lots of storage space," said Bill
Healy, senior vice president, product strategy and marketing, Hitachi Global
Storage Technologies. "As these applications run across consumer and corporate
applications, we wanted to provide various options to meet the differing
requirements of these customer sets."

As a family, the Travelstar C4K60 series presents excellent specifications for
mobility – shock, acoustics, performance and power. The drive’s shock protection
is offered at 500 Gs operating and 1200 Gs non-operating, which means once
properly encased in a device, the drive could safely sustain a three-foot drop
onto a modestly-padded floor.

The C4K60 series also employs noise-reduction technology, which results in sound
emission at idle and seek operations that are virtually undetectable by the
human ear. Finally, the power-management features of Hitachi’s1.8-inch drives
are targeted at providing conservation in the modes at which the drive spends
most of its time: idle, read and standby. The C4K60 series offers the best
combination of power consumption in these modes, which translates into extended
battery life for end users.

Hitachi’s 1.8-inch drives are finding broad acceptance among ultra-portable
applications such as sub-notebooks, MP3 jukeboxes, portable external storage and
personal video players. Hitachi is adding the C4K60 series to what is already
the industry’s broadest portfolio of small form factor hard drives, which are
highly desirable for portable electronics in both corporate and consumer
settings.
