The HP TouchSmart tx2 is the latest multi-touch consumer notebook PC that allows you to navigate and access your programs via the touchscreen display. Read on to see how good it is.

The TouchSmart tx2 features a 12.1-inch touchscreen WXGA display that can swivel 180-degree (from clockwise). A fingerprint reader and three buttons - Mobility Center, MediaSmart and Rotate - are aligned on the right bezel. The Rotate button allows you to change the display to either Portrait or Landscape orientation.

You can navigate and select the applications by touching the screen instead of using your mouse or touchpad.

Above the screen is a HP webcam and built-in microphones (located on both sides from the webcam).

The full-size keyboard is a joy to use, though the function keys at the top row are extremely small. However, for most of us who rarely use the function keys, this would not be a major issue.

The touchpad on the tx2 is slightly different from the typical flat and smooth surface - it has lots of holes like a swiss cheese including the scroll section. The touchpad on/off switch is just below the spacebar.

On the left is the power connector, 5-in-1 card reader (supports SD, MMC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, or xD-Picture), ExpressCard/34 slot and a Lightscribe Super Multi DVD Writer with DL support.

A pen holder, USB, RJ45, expansion port and VGA out can be seen on the right of the TouchSmart tx2. A pen is included with the HP in case you don't want to use your fingers to smudge the display.

At the front is the power switch, Infrared, (headphone) S/PDIF, audio out and microphone connectors and a Wi-Fi switch.

Opening the base covers reveals a 2.5-inch Seagate Momentus 5400.5 320GB SATA hard disk, 1GB Micron DDR2-400 and 2GB Hyundai DDR2-400 memory modules, Broadcom 802.11a/b/g/draft-n Wi-Fi adapter and 7.2V 55Wh battery. Do note that the battery protrudes out when attached.
