HP’s faith in Windows continues to dip as CEO puts more emphasis on Android-based products
Hewlett-Packard (HP) has been a long time enabler of Microsoft’s Windows desktop OS, but times are changing and it appears the company will continue to shift its focus towards developing products that will utilizes operating systems that are not Windows.
During HP’s second quarter earning conference, HP’s CEO Meg Whitman mentioned that the company will continue to expand its portfolio to offer products of different form factors, architectures, and OS. However, when it came down to emphasizing new products, Windows 8 didn’t make the cut as Whitman concentrated on mainly products that run Google’s OS offerings.
“Following the launch of our first Chromebook in February, we launched the slate 7 in the second quarter… Early signs of interest in the tablet are encouraging,” she said. “About PCs, listen, if we have the right product that’s priced right, the channel still loves HP. And frankly, having Android products here helps a lot. The $169 Slate helps covers a segment of the market that we didn’t have before.”
Saying that there are “signs of interest” in the Slate 7 is somewhat over the top, since the company’s 7-incher is neither competitive in price or specs. The overstatement aside, Whitman’s emphasis on Android means that HP is showing a lot more interests in producing and promoting non-Windows hardware—more so now than it did in the past. She also went on the mention the SlateBook x2, a hybrid slate featuring Nvidia’s Tegra 4 chip, yet another Android device.
HP might be a little late to the party as far as media consumption tablets and notebooks are concerned, but that doesn’t mean there’s no more room on the dance floor for another industry veteran. When it’s all said and done, though, let’s just hope HP delivers something better than the $169 Slate 7, because there are too many of those paperweights collecting dust on people’s desks already.
