HTC has delayed the launch of the HTC One smartphone, potentially hurting sales of the new flagship model.

The device, with a 4.7-inch display, is largely seen as the HTC's answer to Samsung's popular Galaxy range, and many analysts saw the HTC One's slightly earlier release than the Galaxy S IV as one of its primary advantages.

Today, however, HTC announced that the HTC One would not release this month, as previously expected, though some pre-orders would ship towards the end of the month. Instead most shipments will not occur until April, the same month as the Galaxy S IV.

The reason for the delay was blamed on difficulty sourcing parts for the phone, with sources at HTC admitting that many manufacturers no longer consider it a top tier partner, suggesting they have inked deals with more lucrative companies like Apple and Samsung.

While HTC was a significant player a few years ago when smartphones were beginning to emerge, it has consistently lost market share to larger rivals. In 2012 its market share was just 4.6 percent, down from 8.8 percent the year before, according to figures from IDC.

At the time of writing HTC shares are down $2.50, or one percent, to $246.50.
