Chinese Huawei is apparently none too fond of sourcing outside chips for its smartphones, as the company has announced that its latest handset – the Ascend D quad – sports a Huawei made quad core ARM based SoC. That makes Huawei – as far as we know – the second handset maker that also makes its own processors, the other being Samsung.

Huawei isn't mincing words either, as the company is calling its quad core ARM SoC – known simply as the K3V2 – the world's fastest quad core smartphone [processor], this making the Ascend D quad the world's fastest smartphone. The only details known about the K3V2 right now is that it will be available with a clock speed of either 1.2 or 1.5GHz and that it has the “industry's most powerful 32-bit true color graphic processor”, suggesting that it might be sporting an ARM Mali-T604 CPU core. The SoC appears to be made by its HiSilicon subsidiary which is listing a model called Hi3611 (K3) on its websites, albeit without providing any specifications, although the K3V2 is likely to be a successor to this specific chip.

As for the handset, well, it has a 4.5-inch display with 720p resolution (1280×720 pixels), an 8Megapixles camera with a BSI sensor that shoots 1080p video, Dolby 5.1 surround sound, Audience earSmart voice technology, an 1,800mAh battery pack and various power management technologies which are said to allow the Ascend D quad to offer up to 30 percent longer battery life than competing devices. The Ascend D quad measures 8.9mm deep with a width of 64mm, although no height was provided. Huawei will offer two variants of the Ascend D quad, the Ascend D quad XL which comes with a 2,500mAh battery pack and the Ascend D1 which is not a single core, but rather a dual core version with a clock speed of 1.5GHz and a smaller 1,670mAh battery pack.
