Qualcomm has another manufacturer to contend with, as benchmarks reveal that Huawei’s eight-core Kirin 920 SoC is almost as fast as the Snapdragon 805.
It looks like Huawei’s upcoming eight-core Kirin 920 SoC will pack a punch. The SoC has four Cortex-A7 and four Cortex-A15 CPU cores in a big.LITTLE arrangement and an ARM Mali-T624 GPU. It isn’t clear whether Huawei has utilized Heterogeneous Multi-Processing and will allow all eight cores to function simultaneously, but what is clear is that it is very fast.
The SoC also has dual-channel DDR3 RAM at a maximum clock 800 MHz, LTE connectivity and can accommodate WQXGA screens with resolutions of 2560 x 1600 and 32 MP camera sensors. The Huawei H300, which was running the Kirin 920, scored 37,363 in AnTuTu, which is slightly lower than the Snapdragon 805’s 37,780 points. In addition to the Kirin 920, Huawei is said to be working on a 64-bit eight-core offering that features four Cortex A53 cores and four Cortex A58 cores.
Other manufacturers are also doing significantly better in the mobile processor segment. Leaked benchmarks of the Tegra K1 suggest that it is going to be much faster than the Snapdragon 805. But the K1 might also utilise more power, which would be an issue as far as energy utilization is concerned. But what it highlights is that other manufacturers are making significant strides in this segment. Samsung is said to working on a 64-bit offering, MediaTek is set to contest aggressively in the mid- to high-end segment and Nvidia, Broadcom and LG are also in the mix.
Qualcomm, meanwhile, has remained relatively silent. It has introduced eight-core 64-bit hardware in the Snapdragon 615, but decided to use stock ARM cores than tweak them in-house, as it usually does. Qualcomm does control the majority of the market share in this segment, but faces a sterner challenge this year from other manufacturers.
