Virtual reality isn’t virtual reality until your entire body is immersed in the virtual world.
Over the weekend, we discussed a project called “Birdly” which did its best to get the user into the mind and body of a flying bird. It used the Oculus Rift virtual reality gaming headset, along with a custom contraption with which you flap your arms, mimicking a bird’s wings during flight. If that looked uncomfortable, wait till you see this!
Two fine gentlemen indie game developers concealed a laptop, a mouse, and video recording equipment (likely just a modern smartphone) onto a high-speed roller-coaster. The idea being: to simultaneously experience the same thrilling theme park ride in virtual reality on an Oculus Rift, and in real-life. They used ‘Rift Coaster’ to use the same roller coaster on the VR headset.

It is certainly a neat idea. Imagine riding a fast roller coaster while being immersed in a virtual air battle / dog-fight, or a car chase. You could get a taste of all sorts of otherwise impossible experiences by just combining the Oculus Rift with a custom theme park ride!
If this is anything to go by, the future of theme park rides is going to be a lot more thrilling than it is today!
