Phone manufacturer i-Mate is working on what will eventually be the world's first Windows Phone 8 powered smartphone. More details inside.

Part phone, part desktop, all powerful and most definitely unique. The new i-Mate Intelegent aims to deliver the full blown Windows 8 experience on a 4.7 inch display. The Intel Atom rocking smartphone/mini-desktop (we haven't yet decided what to call it) will have support for GSM and CDMA radio support and enable calling via i-Mate's bundled cellular connectivity package, complete with a dialer and other requisites (as Windows 8 doesn't really support voice calling natively). The communication software of choice is by Lync.

i-Mate Intelegent Specifications

  • Intel Atom Chipset
  • 4.7 Inch HD (1280 x 768 pixels) Display
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 64 GB Internal Storage
  • 8 MP Rear Camera
  • 3000 mAh Battery
  • Microsoft Windows 8

Despite the power hungry x86 chipset, i-Mate CEO claims 10 hours talk time and 6 hours of video playback, which falls within the range of an average 2012-13 smartphone. Much akin to the ASUS Padfone, i-Mate Intelegent will come with a complete kit (one that looks like a phone) to which you can dock the phone and use the big display as if you're simply using your Windows 8 powered desktop. Handy.

While the phone will end up selling for about $750 (unlocked), the entire kit would cost close to $1600, which is still a bargain considering all the features that you're getting. Such products will only become better as the OS evolves further (we mean Windows Blue), becoming more suited to lower resolution and smaller display sizes.
