PS Minecraft Indie juggernaut Minecraft coming to PS4 as launch title, also planned for PS3 and PS Vita release

Minecraft. We’ve all heard of it, and we all know what it is–and most of us have played it and are enamored by its old-school charm and visual splendor.

To date the indie powerhouse has climbed to the top of the gaming charts and has dominated sales on multiple platforms. When it was introduced to Xbox LIVE, it claimed dominion on the digital marketplace–and even went on to top retail markets when its physical disc iteration was released.

Now Mojang’s definitive voxel do-anything-you-want block-builder is making its way to Sony’s consoles, signifying a true multi-platform experience and giving PlayStation owners the chance to take part in the fun.

At Gamescom, Sony announced that Minecraft is coming to PlayStation 4 as an official launch title.

The news was confirmed by Mojang’s founder Markus “Notch” Persson in a Tweet that simply reads “Minecraft + Sony = True“, which is a sum that PS fans will appreciate.

An additional Twitter message from Notch confirmed that Minecraft is not only releasing for PS4, but PS3 and PS Vita as well–which was met with much fanfare and applause from the community.

Being able to experience Minecraft on-the-go via the PS Vita opens up new doors of accessibility as well as interactivity, allowing gamers a new way to enjoy one of their favorite games (yet the game has been available on mobile platforms for quite some time now, and can arguably be just as enjoyable on iOS or Android).

It was previously believed that Minecraft‘s console version would be exclusive to Microsoft’s Xbox consoles, however Sony has waved away that supposition–which is great news for PlayStation fans.

Along with this news, Sony also highlighted other various indies that will make their way onto the PlayStation 4 and the Vita. Many of the selected titles are indie gems, and it will be interesting to see what the developers have to say about the PS4’s developer-friendly architecture.

Some of the upcoming indies include the following:

  • Rogue Legacy (PS4 & Vita)
  • Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (PS4 & Vita, released in 2014 and free w/ PS Plus)
  • N++ (PS4, releasing this winter)
  • Volume (exclusive to PS4 and Vita, releasing in 2014)
  • Guns of Icarus (a port of the popular PC game)
  • Wasteland Kings (Exclusive to PlayStation consoles)
  • Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number (exclusive to PS4 and Vita, releasing in 2014)

Many of the above indies are sequels to cult hits such as Edmund McMillen’s hilarious arcade-style top-down action game Binding of Isaac as well as Hotline Miami–Dennatron’s dark, blood-soaked comedy-infused take on an early ’80’s thriller.

More information on Minecraft’s PlayStation iteration will assuredly come to light as time goes by, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
