Intel Dual Core Pentium Extreme Edition 840 Review
More Direct 3D game performance tests…
Now we benchmark Far Cry, first in Single Tasking environment.
Not unexpectedly, the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.73Ghz takes the lead in single
tasking environment, roughly 13% faster than the Extreme Edition
Like our previous UT2004 Test, we ran the same video conversion
in the background and then reran Far Cry benchmarks.
The Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.73Ghz still wins by 3% in
low resolutions but we see the 840 taking the lead by 3% in
Next we threw in the same Trend Micro Virus scanning as the
third task and checked out the performance again.
Now the 3.73 Pentium 4 and the 840 ties in low resolution and the 840 edges
out the 3.73 by a 3% margin at higher resolution. The Dual
Core is certainly helping out once we go into multi-tasking environment and
the benefits is showing more as the number of background applications increase.
However, the difference is not as significant as compared to the performance
difference in UT2004. This is probably because Far Cry is a very system bandwidth
dependant game, and the higher Front-side Bus Speed and Faster Memory Speed
of the 3.73Ghz Pentium 4 Extreme Edition is definitely helping it out a lot!
