Intel's next generation in Q1 2011

Following a successful release of the first 32nm Intel CPUs earlier this year, Intel is all set to reveal its next generation CPU, Sandy Bridge, in Q1 2011. Sandy Bridge will build upon Westmere (Nehalem's 32nm shrink). Some of the focus areas of Sandy Bridge are known to be power efficiency and GPU integration. Next up in Intel's release schedule, however, is the uber extreme Gulftown six-core CPU. Incidentally, Sandy Bridge will only release as dual and/or quad core in Q1 2011, with further core CPUs likely coming in later. More next page.

Intel have maintained a tick-tock schedule rather admirably, though this Nehalem generation has been a revolution, with a rather complex product line-up. Nevertheless, 32nm tock shrinks did arrive in Q1 2010, a quarter behind the expected tick-tock schedule. It might seem like Intel have moved the schedule from Q4 releases to Q1 the following year. Thus, following Westmere (Q1 2010) is Sandy Bridge (Q1 2011) with Sandy Bridge's 22nm shrink, Ivy Bridge, likely to release in Q1 2012.
AMD will finally have a next-generation CPU also releasing in H1 2011, though we can expect it to release right after Sandy Bridge.
