Intel Xeon E7-8894 v4 24-core processor announced, priced at $8898

Xeon E7-8894 v4

Intel has introduced its newest flagship Xeon processor aimed at the enterprise segment, the Xeon E7-8894 v4. As the newest flagship processor for servers, the E7-8894 v4 is the fastest Xeon processor that Intel has produced yet. The Broadwell-EX chip packs a total of 24 physical cores and 48 threads thanks to Hyper-Threading support. It has a base clock of 2.4 GHz and is capable of an impressive 3.4 GHz Turbo Boost clock.

Compared to the previous Xeon flagship, the new E7-8894 v4 offers a 200 MHz increase in the base clock, while the turbo frequency remains identical. There is no change in the TDP either, the processor has the same 165W TDP rating as its predecessor.

The Xeon E7-8894 v4 supports 4 to 8 sockets (up to 32 sockets via node controller) with configurations supporting up to 24 processing cores and up to 24 terabytes (TB) of memory per socket to boost in-memory analytics and achieve actionable insights in real-time.

As you would expect, the chip does carry a premium for the extreme performance it delivers. Intel has priced the Xeon E7-8894 v4 at $8898, which is roughly $1700 higher than the previous Xeon flagship based on the Haswell architecture. Compared to that chip, the new E7-8894 v4 offers 25-50% higher performance, so it could perhaps be worth it for a few clients. As for availability, the processor is expected to be available to order within the first quarter of 2017.
