Apple is expected to unveil new versions of both its iPads later this year. According to an analyst, the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 are on track for a Q4 release. The analyst also predicts the launch of a low cost iPad mini next year.
Last month it was speculated that perhaps Apple would unveil the new tablets alongside the new iPhones on September 10. It seemed highly unlikely, the company hasn’t done anything of this sort in the past, it probably wasn’t going to unveil four major product updates at a single event. That rumor has already been contradicted. In a research note to investors, famed KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that both new tablets are going to be launched in Q4, 2013.
There has also been many rumors about the possibility of iPad mini 2 having a Retina display. Some believe that the high resolution display might not be added to iPad mini until next year, others believe Apple will do so this year to fend off competition from other tablets. Kuo is the latter, predicting that iPad mini 2 will have a Retina display and Apple’s next generation A7X processor which will also be used in the iPad 5.
It is also predicted that Apple will launch a low cost iPad mini next year that will have the same display as the existing iPad mini. The tablet might also have a processor based on Apple’s current A6 architecture. This will be done to keep costs down. Does Apple really need to launch a low cost version of its relatively cheaper and smaller iPad? This is the first we’ve heard about such a possibility, so nothing can be said for sure right now.
