Even though it is essentially common knowledge at this point that Apple will reveal the iPhone 5 today at its event in San Francisco, if any doubt remained, then Apple's website guffaw should clear things up.

A search on Apple's website for "iphone 5" revealed a link, containing the URL string "2012/09/12Apple-Introduces-iPhone-5". Another link also came up with the search results, "iphone-5/tips".

This not only makes it clear that Apple will be releasing the product today, but also what the company will call the device – the iPhone 5. This should relieve fans who were worried that Apple would follow suit with the third generation iPad, which it called, simply, "The new iPad".

This term was an annoyance to some, since there has been a set pattern of each iOS device incarnation being called by number – for example, iPhone 2g, iPhone 3g, iPhone 3GS – this same pattern is also generally followed for the iPod touch line. But in any case, Apple's official terms for a product don't change what people will ultimately call it by themselves (Hence the "iPad 3").

Still, the website gaff makes it pretty clear what Apple intends to call the device, and when they intend to release it. It is expected that Apple will also be announcing the next generation iPod touch today, which will be the device’s first update in two years.

Tech blog Engadget will be covering today's iPhone 5 event in less than an hour.
