Apple will release the iPhone 5S and a new, low-cost iPhone in early September, according to analysts at Citigroup.

Citigroup claims that the iPhone 5S was originally slated for June or July, but that Apple encountered inventory issues and was forced to delay the device. This matches comments made by Apple CEO Tim Cook recently that there won't be any new products until later in the year.

Details about the hardware and software are scarce, but we can likely expect iOS 7, and whatever new features that will bring, to be unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

A cheaper iPhone will help Apple expand into emerging markets and could be a deciding factor in whether or not Apple maintains its position in the smartphone market. We can expect cheap, plastic materials and less powerful hardware under the hood.

Apple is also believed to be planning to release the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 in September or October, making this coming Autumn a big time for Apple fans. The release dates should ensure that Apple is able to take advantage of the lucrative Christmas shopping season.
