The Japanese government is investigating claims that Sony's PlayStation Vita handheld console is overheating, leading to possible fire risk.

The National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, which works for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in Japan, has launched a probe into the popular gaming device after reports of 31 cases of overheating, 23 of which occurred in Japan.

All of the cases appear to be related, with claims that the cable burned out and changed colour while the device was recharging, suggesting a potential issue with the battery or charger. There are no reports of injury.

Sony denies that there is a problem and said it will not recall any of the products. “We believe the cause is that the cable got wet or had something stuck to it. There is no defect,” the company said in a statement.

Sony said that users should avoid exposing the cable to “liquids or foreign substances,” a remark that may come off as condescending to some customers.
