Jen-Hsun Huang: "Nvidia is a Software Company", Nvidia's future, Fermi

Reported by on Saturday, October 24 2009 9:47 pm

Chilean website CHW have published an intriguing interview of Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO of Nvidia. Mr. Huang's first lines in the interview are "Well, Nvidia is a software company". JHH argues that Nvidia are much like Apple, in the way they are software companies making money by selling hardware. He goes on to talk about the evolution of GPUs, Nvidia's chipset business, Tegra, and more. JHH confirms that Nvidia is indeed exiting the chipset business for Intel 5 series chipsets, but will continue to sell chipsets for the previous generation FSB based CPUs. Yes, JHH does talk about Fermi, and the reason why Fermi is largely targeted towards the Workstation customers is not just future promise, but also present fact. Though gaming GPUs make up more than 2/3rd of Nvidia sales, the high margin Quadro products bring in 2/3rd of Nvidia's profit. More next page.

Couple this with the massive potential in HPC based Tesla products, and we have a clear picture as to why Nvidia's Fermi brings about major improvements in computing and workstation graphics rather than gaming.

However, in the most interesting part of the interview, JHH insists the new graphics capabilities of Fermi have not been revealed yet. Fermi was announced at GTC - which is a parallel computing event rather than a gaming one - which is why the demonstration focused on the computing aspects of Fermi. It is possible, as JHH puts it, that there are a lot of "other exciting secrets" about Fermi that will be revealed later. There was no talk of release dates, however.

We will keep a keen eye out for these new features, now that JHH has our eyes raised.

Finally, JHH feels the upcoming Lucid Hydra 200 "sounds like a terrible idea". If Lucid live up to their promise, Hydra is capable of making both SLI and Crossfire obsolete. We are less than a week away from Hydra 200's launch, something for look forward too.
