Android 4.4 adoption more than doubled over a one-month period ending April 1st.

The latest Android distribution numbers show a two-fold increase in market share for the latest version of the OS, with Jelly Bean still maintaining its lead.

Android 4.4 now runs on 5.3 percent of all Android devices (those that have Google services pre-installed), which is quite a bit higher than the 2.5 percent share it held a month ago. Jelly Bean saw a slight decline to 61.4 percent (down from 62 percent), part of which can be attributed to flagship devices like the Galaxy Note 3, HTC One and Galaxy S4 getting updates to Android 4.4.

Rounding out the Android 4.x versions is Ice Cream Sandwich with a 14.3 percent install base. Meanwhile, the once mighty Gingerbread fell from 19 percent to 17.8 percent, a gradual drop that should intensify as consumers upgrade to newer devices, and as devices running KitKat out of the box hit markets over the coming months, such as the HTC One M8 and the Samsung Galaxy S5.
