Camera company Eastman Kodak has sued Apple and HTC over the alleged infringement of a number of patents relating to digital camera images, a move that could rescue the firm from impending bankruptcy.

Kodak claims that Apple has infringed four of its digital camera patents and HTC has infringed five. It also previously filed a patent lawsuit against BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM).

It is seeking an injunction against the sale of the infringing products, which include the iPad 2, iPod Touch, several iPhone models, and a number of HTC smartphones. It also wants compensation for its losses, including triple damages.

Kodak has been struggling to survive, having made a late move into the digital camera arena. The widespread availability of cameras in mobile phones has likely also contributed to its plummeting sales.

Things are so bad for the company that it might file for bankruptcy, but it is hoping to avoid that outcome by revamping its business and selling off key assets, such as a portfolio of over 1,000 of its patents. However, if it secures licensing deals and large settlements from HTC and Apple, the latter of which has a market value over 2,400 times higher than Kodak, it could potentially keep itself afloat.

At the time of writing, Kodak shares were up $0.22, or 36.7 percent, to $0.82.
