Komag, a key ingredient to Hitachi’s hard disk drive success, has announced an agreement with Hitachi GST to supply 3.5-inch hard disk drive media under a five year growth plan.

Komag has been a media supplier for Hitachi GST hard disks for several years already. From the looks of it, Hitachi has not made such a bad move by doing this as Komag has a lot of experience in thin-film media technology. This news comes after Hitachi’s announcements of its new line of desktop and DVR hard drives with the new higher-density 160GB platters which, we now assume, are supplied by Komag.

Among some feats reached by Komag is the design of not only Hitachi’s latest 160GB platters but also 200GB-240GB platters which are currently under evaluation which will utilize Perpendicular Magnetic Recording. The media manufacturer has been in the thin-film media industry for over 20 years and has a strong customer base.

Besides Hitachi, Komag’s other customers include Maxtor/Seagate and Western Digital — all major players in the computer storage industry.
