The electrical performance of the LEPA G1600-MA power supply left us with mixed feelings. On one hand, the voltage regulation is mediocre, reaching up to 4.5% for the 12V line and about 3.5% for the two minor voltage lines, which is not bad at all considering the massive amount of power this unit needs to pull out but grazes the 5% specification limit as well. On the other hand, ripple suppression is exceptional, with the maximum recorded ripple being a mere 30mV on the 12V line under full load, while 123A were being drawn from it too.
As LEPA claims, the G1600-MA does surpass the 80Plus Gold level; it will not reach 80Plus Platinum levels though. Not that we expected it to, it is extremely difficult to reach that kind of efficiency with that level of power output and still have a commercially viable product, which is not on par with LEPA's market policy.
The thermal performance of the LEPA G1600-MA is good, always keeping in mind the massive power output of the unit. The power supply will remain cool up to 60% load, after which point the temperatures will start scaling faster but will never reach worrisome levels. As a matter of fact, the temperature delta is only 12.1°C at maximum load, a tiny figure considering that the power supply dissipates about 210W of heat at this point.
It would seem that the ADDA fan is programmed to react linearly and according to the unit's load. That has the LEPA G1600-MA running quiet up to about 50% capacity, where the unit has already reached an output of 800W. If this power supply finds itself loaded beyond 50% capacity however, the fan will keep speeding up, from the noticeable 30dB(A) at 60% load up to the ear-bursting 39.2dB(A) at maximum load.
