This Thursday, LG Display took the wraps off the world’s slimmest mobile display, aimed at Smartphones, to pack a 1080p Full HD resolution. The 5.2-inch 1080p display, as showcased by LG, is stunningly thin at just 2.2mm. Additionally, the bezel on the sides is no more than 2.3mm (our jaws dropped and crashed through the floor a few meters down the ground). LG Display promises that their new panel is brighter, crisper, lighter, easier to grip and has a better viewing angle than any of their previous panels.

“Today’s introduction of the world’s slimmest Full HD LCD panel represents an exciting advancement for the high-end smartphone segment, and is possible due to our world-class expertise in IPS and touch technologies. LG Display will continue its commitment to developing products that maximize consumer value as well as opening new doors for the mobile and tablet PC industry.”-Dr. Byeong-Koo Kim, Vice President, LG Display’s IT and Mobile Development Group

The key technology behind achieving such slim profiles is the improved OGS technology, now called Advanced One-Glass-Solution (OGS) by LG Display. The number of lines on a display are reduced by up to 30%, achieved by inserting dual-flexible printed circuits between the display panel and touch film. Each pixel is made up of three RGB sub-pixels (no PenTile matrix crap here). The new 5.2-inch 1080p display offers a maximum of 535 nits of brightness (:covers our eyes:), a very high contrast ratio and good sunlight legibility according to LG Display.

We can’t say if this is the same panel being used in the upcoming LG Optimus G2 flagship, but it very well may be the one. In that case, we are even more excited to see the Optimus G successor, especially its display.
